Looking for MANCHESTER of Kansas - Indiana
Arthur Thomas Manchester was born Oct. 1876 In Columbia City, Whitley Co., IN. His birth name was Thomas Arthur Ferguson [?]. In doing my research I discovered that his father died 18 months "before" he was born. His mother,Rebecca DELKERD-FERGUSON was left penniless with 2 small girls. She was a mid-wife, taught school and took in laundry. Know one knows who Arthur's real father is. In 1879 Rebecca married John M. Haney they moved to NESS Co., KS that same year.
John Haney "took a disliking to Arthur" and nearly beat him to death when he was 4 years old. He was put up for adoption in 1880-1881 in Ness City, Ness county. John Haney took his mother, two older sisters and a half brother to Dodge City, KS that same year.
From the 1880 census I know that the adopted father was W.T. MANCHESTER-1828-NY. Emma Manchester-1842-NY and daughter Lora-1864-NY.
By 1885 they had May Armstrong, born 1883, living with them that they also adopted. W. T. Manchester died between 1895 - 1900. Emma died between 1900-1910. May was married to William EVERHART by 1900.
Anyone with Mancesters from NY and MA that lived in Ness Co., KS???
The 1880 census shows a W.A.Manchester living close by could be a brother. HELP
