- born 24th January 1859 Rushey Green, Lewisham, Kent, England to an Irish mother and an English scientist father. His father died when he was nine and he was educated in England and France and became fluent in French. He emigrated to New Zealand in January 1880, to join his brother, Austin, in the New Zealand Armed Constabulary at Opunake. He took part in the storming of the village of Parihaka on 5 November 1881. He left the Armed Constabulary after three years service and became involved in surfboats which unloaded cargo at Opunake. With his brother he eventually bought a large block of land in Statford His mother and two sisters emigrated to join the brothers. He eventually owned several farms in Taranaki. He married twice, his first wife, Elinor Lucy (n?e Penn) in November 1886, the couple had a daughter and four sons, died during childbirth in June 1904.

Two brothers also served in the war. He was educated at Moniaive Public School and was unmarried. After leaving school he worked for Walter Neilson, merchant, in Moniaive then went to work in Glasgow for 5 years.
In October 1911 he emigrated to New Zealand and went to work as a ploughman for Mr W.A. Scaife of Mount Pisa, Cromwell, Otago. On January 15, 1915, he enlisted in the N.Z.E.F. Report in the Dumfries and Galloway Standard & Advertiser of September 15th 1915.

He was the second son of Mr. J McCarthy, well known for many years as a general storekeeper in the Birkenhead district. Sergeant McCarthy was a carpenter by trade and was well known in building circles in Auckland, Gisborne and Opotiki.
