Looking for Charles Hartley, b. 1831, London, England

Query by Tiffaney

Hi all, Another brick wall I have is Charles Hartley, born 1831, London, England . He must have left England when quite young to become a seaman sailing to several parts of the world & also later whaling around the South Pacific before settling in Okain's around 1859.

In a census when in New Zealand he is listed as shoemaker. Perhaps is father was a shoemaker!!

On 18 September, 1861 he married a widow, Martha Holstein (nee Bomforth) at the Okain's Bay Chapel School., Banks Peninsula, Canterbury, New Zealand.

Charles died at the age of 77yrs & is buried in Okain's Bay Cemetary as is his wife Martha who was buried 13 June, 1880, aged 42yrs. Charle's death cert states he had lived in New Zealand for 50 years.

Children of Martha & Charles Hartley:
William Hartley born 31 Sept. 1862
George Hartley born 25 July, 1864 died 4 May 1865
Robert John Edward Hartley born 10 Feb. 1866
George Frederick Hartley 30 Nov. 1867
John Christopher Hartley born 3 June 1876
Agnes Caroline Hartley born 2 May, 1878.
Any help or connections with Charles greatly appreciated.
Thanks Tiffaney.
Have more info of the Hartley families in New Zealand if anyone interested.

Further information re Charles.
Find from his obituary he became a sailor sailing to several parts of the world before trying his hand at whaling mainly around the South Pacific frequently landing on New Zealand shores before settling down in Okain's Bay. Banks Peninsula, NZ.
Would love to know ships he sailed in. Thanks Tiffaney
