- Julia was born in Christchurch, 1 of 9 children of the Whaler Louis Eugene L'ANGLOIS (born in Cherbourg, Manche department, Normandy, France 1820 died 1924 in Christchurch) and Mary Maria TAYLOR (1833-1900). Louis & Mary had married in Tasmania Australia in 1852, then later sailed to New Zealand on the ship of his brother, Captain Isadore 'Jean' L'Anglois, the "COMTE de PARIS". Captain Jean L'Anglois was in Banks Peninsula in 1838 when Captain CECILLE of the "Heroine" hoisted the French flag. He returned in 1840 bringing out the first 62 French colonists to Akaroa. He also endeavoured to 'buy' millions of acres of the South Island (for the French Company) which comprised nearly all the land from sea to sea, that of Canterbury, all Westland and parts of Nelson and Marlborough. The deed was signed by a few Maori at Pigeon Bay August 12 1840 which was a few months AFTER the proclamation of the Queen's Sovereignty (this was well known by Jean). Much has been written about L'Anglois's attempt to 'delude the Maori and deceive the English Government', the following is a good read:
Attempted French Settlement

* Louis & Mary moved to Waikouaiti, East Otago, for a time
* A charming story of Louis Langlois in 1880 (back in Canterbury and then aged 60), where he was known as the 'Bee Master"
DEATH - LANGLOIS, on November 19th 1900 at Opawa, Christchurch, Mary Maria, beloved wife of Louis Langlois, age 67 yrs, and daughter of the late John TAYLOR, Esq. of London, and cousin to the late Rev. George PROTHEROE, Isle of Wight, and of Canon Protheroe, also Thomas Protheroe, Esq. Solicitor & Barrister, St. Johns Wood. London, England. Home papers please copy
NOTE the ancestors of Julia appear to have spelt their name without the E on the end of PROTHERO

NOTES
ROSEWOOD LETTER
* Queensland Times, Ipswich Herald & General Advertiser, 27 July 1901

On Thursday evening Miss Drummond entertained a number of friends at a birthday party, which was held in the Farmers' Hall. The building was nicely decorated with greenery and bunting. About 60 persons were present, and a very pleasant time was passed in dancing and social games.
During the evening Miss Drummond and her sister, Mrs. Stroobant, executed a dance in excellent style. Several songs were rendered by Misses Hanlon, Hohnke, Drummond (who was obliged to respond to an encore), and Mr. Reinhardt. The accompaniments were played by Misses Hohnke and Hanloo. About mid-night an excellent cold collation was served on the stage, one of the principal features of the festive board being a handsome three tier birthday cake, After supper, dancing was resumed, and, as the floor was in excellent order and splendid music was provided by Misses Hohnke and Hanlon (piano) and Messrs. F. O'Donnell, A. Dobson, and P. Lenehan (violin), the pastime was much enjoyed. Mr. O'Donnell acted as M.C. The catering, including the supply of the handsome cake, was principally carried out by Mr. C. Stroobant, though some of the toothsome dainties were obtained from Mr. F. J. Ireland, of Ipswich. The guests departed in the "wee sma' 'oore," after spending a delightful evening. Miss Drummond (who was ably assisted by Mrs. Stroobant and Messrs. Stroobant and Bunney in entertaining the large number of guests) was the recipient of many valuable presents and congratulations during the evening.
