As early as ten o'clock in the morning an immense concourse of people assembled to witness the departure of two vessels, laden with emigrants, for the new colony of Albert Land, New Zealand. These emigrants are principally composed of members of the various nonconformist bodies, but include some persons who belong to the Church of England.

Availing themselves of the liberal offer of the New Zealand Government to grant forty acres of land to every emigrant paying his passage to the colony, with a proportionate grant in addition for each member of his family, Mr W. R. Brame and a number of friends have organised an enigration on a scale quite unprecedented.
In a comparatively brief period over a thousand persons have been duly registered, in spite of the numbers whose proposals have been declined, because for divers reasons they were deemed unsuitable. Only such persons were selected as possessed a certain amount of capital, or were proficient in some valuable mechanical avocation, or were in other points calculated to prove profitable to the new colony.
Should the pioneers report favourably, we may expect their new settlement to become highly popular.

The Colony of Albert Land, to which they proceed, is situate on the banks of a beautiful river named the Ornawharo, fifty or sixty mles from Auckland, a district of the fertility of which the most encouraging reports are given by competent authorities

The MATILDA WATTENBACH, a British-built clipper-ship of 1,000 tons, belonging to Messrs Wattenbachm Heilgers, and Co., of Mincingland; and the HANOVER, a ship of the same class and tonnage, and owned by George Marshall and Co., were specially selected from Messrs Shaw and Savill's well-known passenger line of packets, and will be followed by the WILLIAM MILES, 1,250 tons, on the 10th July.

On board the 'Matilda Wattenbach' there were about 350 passengers, including the Rev. S. Edgar, Mr W. R. Brame, the originator of the movement and the committee of management for "the new settlement"

On board the 'Hanover' there were about 280 passengers.

The IDA ZIEGLER also belonging to Messrs Wattenbach, heilgers and C., follows the 'William Miles' in the course of July. She made, last year, the fastest passage on record from London to Auckland, namely, eighty-five days.
The 'Matila Wattenbach' was formerly in the Calcutta line, and made the fastest passages on record, namely, outward 79 days, and homewards 86 days.

At ten o'clock the company began to assemble in a spacious booth erected for the purpose within the dock premises, where a public "farewell demonstration" was held, under the presidency of Mr Harper Twelvetrees. Some 15,000 persons were in attendance, and the Chairman and others having addressed them, the emigrants went on board. Salutes were fired, and the vessels were taken in tow by powerful steam-tugs amidst deafening applause from the immense multitude assembled to bid their friends farewell

Hesitation of the Immigrants from the "William Miles"

In December, 1871, he left the Fire Brigade, and was married the following day to a daughter of the late Mr. W. Parrett, carpenter, of Devonshire, England. Six weeks afterwards Mr. and Mrs Chatterton sailed for New Zealand in the ship 'Dover Castle' in 1878 Mr Chatterton began farming in the Flaxton district, where he has remained ever since, except for a trip Home in 1889. He was for four years on the Flaxton main school committee, and was chairman for three years He is a member of the Wesleyan Church, and has held nearly every office in connection with it in the Rangiora circuit Mr Chatterton was recently presented with a handsome illuminated testimonial, framed with the portraits of himself, the teachers, and the school, in recognition of his having completed a quarter of a century as superintendent of the Southbrook Sunday school.
