The late Mrs Diggelmann died on Sunday after a short attack of pneumonia and Mr Diggelmann who was at the same time suffering from pneumonia succumbed on Tuesday night at eight o'clock. Mr and Mrs Diggelmann were each 74 years of age and were born in Switzerland. A family of four children remain to mourn their loss, Mrs G. Tetley (Emma Ida) of Katikati; Miss Anna Diggelmann also of Katikati; Mr Hermann Diggelmann of Otahuhu and Mr B. (Bruno). Diggelmann of Katikati.
Last week Mr Herman Diggelmann met with a serious accident when motoring to his parents' home and had to be taken to the Auckland Hospital. Miss Anna Diggelmann who was living with her parents is suffering from a serious attack of pneumonia.
The late Mr Diggelmann came to New Zealand about fifty-five years ago. He was for some time working on the ostrich farm at Clevedon, afterwards taking up 300 acres of land at what is now known as Diggelmann Point. Soon after settling in Katikati he married and had made one of the finest farms in the district, completing about fifty years on the original block.
The late Mr Diggelmann was an industrious and hard working man and was held in the highest respect by those with whom he came in contact. The late Mrs Diggelmann was also greatly respected and was prominent as a worker and exhibitor at the Katikati Agricultural and pastoral show where she won many prizes. A sense of deep regret and sympathy with the bereaved family is shared in the district.

Auckland Star, 28 Aug 1942 JOURNALIST'S DEATH. The Rev Albert Bygrace Chappell, M.A., well known in literary, education and scientific circles throughout New Zealand, died at his home in Auckland to-day, in his seventieth year. Mr Chappell was a man of many intellectual interests and activities and during his residence in Auckland they ranged from the Dickens Club to research and compilation of the province's historical records.
Born in Southsea, Portsmouth, England, in 1872, Mr Chappell came to New Zealand with his parents at an early age and when the family settled at Tauranga he attended the Tauranga school, going on later to the Palmerston North High School, Three Kings College, Prince Albert College and Canterbury University College to complete his education. He took his M.A. degree in Canterbury College and also gained the first diploma in journalism granted in New Zealand. During the course of his studies he gained honours in political science and dialectics.
The Church claimed Mr Chappell's first attention. In 1894 he entered the ministry of the Wesleyan Church and he served in Wellington, Christchurch, Auckland, Feilding, Wanganui and New Plymouth. For two year he was organising secretary of the young people's movement. In 1917 he took the office of registrar of the Auckland University College, which he occupied for six years before resigning to take up an appointment on the editorial staff of the Auckland Herald, from which he retired last year. In his youthful days Mr Chappell had had journalistic interludes, when he was connected with the Bay of Plenty Times, the Opotiki Mail and the Woodville Examiner. His very wide and diversified interests are indicated by the fact that he was secretary in the N.Z. Conference and Synods of the Church, served on school committees, high school boards and the Education Board in Taranaki. the Auckland Chamber of Commerce, was a founder of the Boy Scout movement, was on the council of the Young Citizens' League, a tutor for the W.E.A., prominently connected with the Dickens Club and the Savage Club and was a leader in historical research records of the Auckland province. He continued with his ministerial duties to the last.
Mr Chappell in 1908 married Mary Elizabeth, daughter of Mr A. W. McKinney, of New Brighton, Christchurch and had a family of three sons and three daughters.

* CHATFIELD, Alfred William - 18 Feb 1924 aged 75
. Son of Alfred William Chatfield (1812-1892) & Harriet Jane Holbrook (1820-1859), Alfred was a Surgeon Dentist, of the London Dentistry, practiced in Melbourne and Auckland. He married Annie Alma Angelina MacArthur (1856-1947) of Tasmania, in Melbourne 6 April 1876 & had 5 children.
Auckland Star, 19 Feb 1924 We regret to announce the death of Mr Alfred William Chatfield, a highly esteemed resident of Auckland, who died yesterday at the age of 76. Trained in London, Mr Chatfield had a high standing as a dentist and was practically the father of the profession in Auckland, having been in practice since 1881. He always took a deep interest in matters belonging to the profession and among other offices in the local society he held that of president. During a very active life Mr Chatfield was essentially an out-door man. In addition to being an enthusiastic yachtsman he was also a keen shot and up to within a year of his death he hardly ever missed the opening of the duck shooting season in the Lower Waikato. His interest in this sport naturally meant an interest in dogs and he was formerly a member of the Auckland Kennel Club. As a yachtsman he sailed for many years the well-known four rater Rangatira, which was built to his order, by Mr C. Bailey junior and many of the present generation of yachtsmen owe their knowledge of sailing to the careful and friendly schooling young hands always got on his boat. Even up to the last Mr Chatfield retained his love of the sea and after he gave up sails he had a motor launch, the Waimana, and was proverbial among yachtsmen for the perfect order in which he kept his craft. In sport as in business he set a very high standard and was a splendid example for the younger men with whom he came in contact. For many years he was a flag officer and committeeman of the Auckland Yacht Club which is now the New Zealand Yacht Squadron. Mr Chatfield was a brother of the late Captain Chatfield, of the Union Company. He leaves a widow and a grown-up family - Dr H. A. Chatfield (Holbrook Alfred, dentist), Mr Selwyn Chatfield (chief officer of the Marama) (Selwyn Athol), Mr Lionel Chatfield (Lionel Clyde) and Mrs W. Heather (Myrtle Ada Alice). The interment, which is private, takes place to-morrow.

Auckland Council provided Native Affairs with the names of the 1800 people but, as you will see at the above link, they do not contain any ages or other identifiable info, which is why I have expanded the list here to help you recognise any possible ancestors. Each and every person has been individually researched; using BDM, Papers Past, the cemetery database, family trees or any other means which revealed some of the names (spelling) or dates, differ slightly from the list - this is pointed out on each.
. NOTES .
* lack of time means I have not looked for all maiden names, nor to link all parents or partners, but will come back to edit from time to time.
* same surnames grouped together does not necessarily mean they were related.
* dates could be of death or burial
* my edits & additions will be obvious

Gisborne Times, 11 Dec 1931 Widespread regret will be felt at the death yesterday morning, at her parents' residence, 221 Harris Street, of Miss Margaret Inglis Bruce, only surviving daughter of Mr and Mrs W. D. Bruce. Born in Gisborne 28 years ago, the late Miss Bruce spent practically the whole of her life in this district. For some time past, she had enjoyed only indifferent health, this necessitating her retirement from active participation in social life. In her younger days she was an enthusiastic dancer and a keen sportswoman, while her interest in music made her one of the most popular members of any gathering in the social world. An old student of the Gisborne High School, she gave much practical assistance to the association and on occasions gave her services and invoked those of her fellow-members of a capable amateur orchestra in connection with the functions conducted by the organisation. Of an earnest and lovable nature, Miss Bruce had hosts of friends, who noted with grief her steady decline in health during recent months and hwo will share with Mr and Mrs Bruce a deep sense of loss occasioned by her passing. The bereavement of the parents is rendered more acute by the fact that Miss Margaret Bruce was the only surviving daughter, her elder sister having died some years ago.

1800 unclaimed urns at WAIKUMETE Cemetery
The following list of names are of those whose ashes were kept in the little old chapel at Waikumete Cemetery for many years (from Dec 1977). When the chapel needed some restoration work, the ashes were moved below ground into 3 concrete vaults and have, at this date, become known as the 1800 unclaimed urns
... In 2016 Terry Fergusson went in search of the missing link in his Ngapuhi Whakapapa, his great grand father Hudson Pomare Fergusson (1855-1943) died over 70 years ago. He was cremated and interred at Waikumete Cemetery in Auckland. Terry soon found out his great grandfather's ashes were not where they were originally laid to rest. He says when Auckland Council officials revealed to him the whereabouts of the ashes he was angry and shocked. "The fact that we have uncovered that he was moved, not once, twice but three times and then put in a mass grave with up to 2000 other people."
Terry and his family have requested the return of the ashes of their tipuna to take them home to Hokianga. However Katherine Moore, Manager of Cemeteries at Auckland Council says, "They are pretty reluctant to start down that road, mainly because we think that there is a real risk to damage or disturb the remains of others that are there".
The Ferguson whanau is now seeking legal advice on what they can do next. Terry Fergusson is urging other families who may have loved ones who were cremated and interred at the original Waikumete Crematorium between 1920 - 1970's to see if your ancestors name is on the list.
Auckland Council provided Native Affairs with the names of the 1800 people but, as you will see at the above link, they do not contain any ages or other identifiable info, which is why I have expanded the list here to help you recognise any possible ancestors. Each and every person has been individually researched; using BDM, Papers Past, the cemetery database, family trees, or any other means I could find, which then revealed a number of the names (spelling) or dates, differed slightly from the those on the list - this is pointed out when applicable.
. NOTES .
* lack of time means I have not looked for all maiden names, nor to link all parents or partners, but will come back to edit from time to time.
* same surnames grouped together does not necessarily mean they were related.
* dates could be of death or burial
* my edits & additions will be obvious
* further info may be found Waikumete Cemetery on Find A Grave

go to following link, for a must-watch of the history, story and many wonderful old photos .. council made a short film (9:02) of the Ashby family's descendants visiting the park.
Situated 145 Deerys Road, Orere Point, Auckland, is the coastal farm park with a rich Maori history. A white sand, pohutukawa edged beach. The tangata whenua here are 'Hauraki Tribes', the Marutuahu, who originated from the Tainui Canoe. This spot, just south of Orere point, was the northernmost reaches of their lands. A Pakeha bushmen and kauri felling family, named the Ashbys, arrived and built their homestead villa here in 1900 in kitset form, having been delivered by the Matakana steamer. After having 14 children (15 counting . 6 . Emily), they came to use the front room as a schoolroom and post office. It is still in good repair and forms part of the park. Their family cemetery is not far away. Tapapakanga still operates as a farm, with a ranger and sheep and cows. It has won a 'Green' award for the management practices employed here. The pa site is easy to recognise and quite impressive. There are still many marae of the Marutuahu around the district.

first Bank in NZ was at Port Nicholson 1840
from Hutt City Libraries
... Somewhere in Petone is located the site of the first bank to be established in New Zealand—the Union Bank of Australia. Just where that site is will probably never be known, the only clue is contained in a paragraph in a copy of the New Zealand Gazette, published in May, 1840 (probably May 2nd), which reads: "The Rev. J. Mcfarlane of the Kirk of Scotland will perform" Divine Service at half-past ten o'clock, and the Rev. J. G. Butler "at twelve o'clock, every Sunday, at the Council House, in front "of the Bank."
E. J. Wakefield tells us that the Council House was half-a-mile from Pito-one, i.e., the pa.
The date when the bank opened is fixed by an advertisement in the New Zealand Gazette, establishing the fact that business was commenced on Tuesday, 24th March, 1840. A typical letter in the New Zealand Gazette> reads, "The Bank has arrived and will" relieve us from the inconvenience of barter trade."
In regard to the location, half-a-mile along the beach would give the end of Nelson Street, but it is more than likely that the bank was situated nearer Victoria Street. Elsewhere, reasons are given for believing that Clyde Terrace was somewhere in this locality. We do know that the Rev. J. Mcfarlane lived in Clyde Terrace, and that a letter states that "the houses there are "the best in the colony."
On the arrival of the Glenbervie, by which the "bank" arrived, Captain Mein Smith was living in "a large tent," so that the building of his house must have been after the bank was established.
