LESLIE's OBITUARY in the Northern Star, Lismore, 10 November 1944:
... The death occurred in Kyogle Memorial Hospital of Leslie George Rolfe, aged 64 years. He was the son of the late E. R. Rolfe, of Nerriga, South Coast. He was engaged in farming all his life and spent several years in New Zealand, where he met and married Miss Elizabeth Adams. They came to Kyogle district 34 years ago. Mr Rolfe purchased portion of the McKinnon estate at Collins Creek, where the family resided until about 12 months ago, when they moved to Kyogle to live and later to Geneva. He is survived by his wife, one daughter, Mrs. John Coglan of Collins Creek, and three sons, Ronald and Ernest (Kyogle) and Spencer of Kopaki, New Zealand, and seven grandchildren. Two sisters, Messrs. P. Hart, of Kingaroy, Queensland, and Mrs Muffit (Sydney), and brothers, Harry, of Sydney, and John, of Nerriga, also survive. One sister, Mrs Burt, and one brother Lindsay, predeceased him. The funeral, which was largely attended, moved from the Presbyterian Church, Kyogle. Pall bearers were Ronald and Ernest (sons), David Rolfe (nephew) Gordon Reeves and Pat Clark. Funeral arrangements were carried out by G. Groves and Sons

LIZZIE moved back to New Zealand to be with her aged mother (who actually died 7 months after Lizzie) and was living in Tokomaru when she died on 23 March 1947 aged 55. She is buried Plot 035, Block 003 at Kelvin Grove

LIZZIE's OBITUARY in the Northern Star, Lismore, 26 May 1947:
... The death occurred at Palmerston (N.Z.) of a former well-known resident of Kyogle district, Mrs Elizabeth Rolfe, aged 54 years. Her husband, the late Mr. Les Rolfe, and two children, Lindsay and Amy pre deceased her. She is survived by three sons and one daughter, Mrs. John Coglan (Lynch's Creek), and Messrs. Ernest, Spencer and Ronald Rolfe, of Collin's Creek. Mrs. Rolfe was the daughter of Mrs. C. Adams and the late Mr. J. Adams, of Tauranga, New Zealand. Born at Palmerston in 1893, she was married at the same town in 1909, and came to Australia 37 years ago to settle on one of the Wiangaree subdivision blocks. With her husband she faced many trials and hardships of the pioneering days in this district. She was noted for her kindness and charitable actions in time of need and sickness. During the war she was a keen worker for patriotic organisations. After the death of her husband almost three years ago she decided to go back to New Zealand to stay with her aged mother. About a year before Mr. Rolfe's death they retired from their farm at Collin's Creek and went to reside at Geneva.

... The town of Kyogle located off the coast of north-east New South Wales was originally inhabited by the Bundjalung Aboriginal people, and retained its Aboriginal name meaning 'the place of the plain turkey'. The areas Pine and Cedar forests would attract timber getters in the 1820s and with the introduction of the Free Selection Bill in the 1860s, the fertile plains on the banks of the Richmond River were home to several dairy farms

RECORD MOUSTACHE, BRITISH ARMY CHAMPION
Once proud possessor of the champion moustache in the British Army, Mr C. F. Bollingford, third cook on an overseas merchant vessel at present in port, is now cultivating a second growth with which he hopes eventually to equal and even surpass his previous record of 23in from tip to tip. Begun last August, it has now achieved an overall measurement of 11in.
Moustache number one was known throughout the British Army, where its owner served for four years during the present war as a member of a pioneer corps, holding the rank of sergeant. The 23in moustache he cultivate during that period was of a style that followed the best sergeant-major tradition, two fierce waxed spears that sprang from a bushy centre growth.
Mr Bollingford left his champion moustache behind when he quitted the Army last year, but in August decided to create a successor. Its average rate of growth to the present day has been 1in a month, and if this figure is maintained moustache number two will equal its predeceasor's record in July 1916. Mr Bollingford scorns suggestions that artificial aids such as lotions or hair food have been used in the creation of his two hirsute decorations and claims that only pure wax dressings have ever been used to train the hairs along their correct path of growth.
Aged 57, Mr Bollingford served in the last war with the Canadian forces. His home town is London, and he is the father of 12 living children. Two other children were killed in the blitz and one lost his life while serving in the merchant navy

* Evening Post, 24 Feb 1939 HELEN STEWART BUICK - Mrs James Buick died at her residence at Tiakitahuna last week at the age of 96. Mrs Buick could justly lay claim to having been a pioneer of the Manawatu. Born at Waiwetu on June 17 1843, she was one of the earliest children of that settlement and so far as is known, was the oldest white woman born in New Zealand. Her father, Mr David McEwen, was an engineer who came to the colony in the ship 'Bengal
Merchant' and was subsequently a member of the Wellington Provincial Government. Later he settled in the Manawatu and was the first postmaster at Karere. It was 60 years ago that he ventured north from Belmont, conveying his family in a one-horse dray which became stuck in the Ohau river and had to be hauled out by Maori. A clearing was made in the bush at Tiakitahuna, and with pit-sawn timber a house was constructed. Numbers of times the farms was swept by flood waters from the Manawatu river. Surviving sons of the deceased, who was predeceased by her husband, are; Messrs J. L. Buick (Carterton), D. Buick (Tiakitahuna), H. Buick (Johnsonville) and A. Buick (Kauwhata). Surviving daughters are Mesdames W. Edwards (Palmerston North), R. J. Seddon (Tiakitahuna), J. Carruthers (Gonville) and E. Irwin (Dannevirke)

mortality on 'BROTHERS PRIDE' - Lyttelton 1863

The Brothers' Pride, ship: 1236 tons, Captain: Sproul, sailed from London 25 July 1863 & arrived in Lyttelton December 10 1863
... When the Brothers' Pride, flying the yellow flag, dropped anchor at Lyttelton on December 10th, 1863, the melancholy intelligence of the death of forty-four persons having occurred during the voyage soon reached the shore. The vessel sailed from London with 371 Government immigrants, and experienced a rough passage, but no serious damage was done to the ship. Both vessel and passengers on arrival were placed in quarantine.

Colonist, 8 January 1864 GREAT MORTALITY
THE SHIP BROTHER'S PRIDE
- The Lyttelton Times says - "On Tuesday last we briefly noticed the arrival of this vessel at the heads, and although we possessed the information since proved to be too true respecting the amount of sickness on board, for the sake of friends on shore we refrained from published the melancholy intelligence that 44 deaths had occurred during the passage. In our columns will be found a list of the sufferers, as well as the number of births.
We hear that Captain Sproul, on boarding the vessel, was refused the charge of the ship, and the offer of the Pilot to place his boat and crew at the service of the ship to obtain fresh supplies for the sick children was also refused. On Tuesday evening the anchor was raised, and sail made before half a gale of wind blowing from the S.W., and at daylight next morning the vessel was out of sight. She returned yesterday morning when off Camp Bay, and was immediately ordered to hoist the Yellow Jack. This peremptory order of the Health Commissioner not appearing to suit this cavalier officer, in two or three hours the anchor was again up, and with the assistance of the light breeze from N.E., the Brother's Pride, was brought up just astern of the Lancashire Witch. We presume the authorities will not permit their orders to be set at defiance, and the law treated with contempt.

Hawke's Bay Herald, 23 December 1879 An inquest was held yesterday at the Foresters' Arms Hotel, before Dr Hitchings, Coroner, on the body of William Andrew Bulled, who was killed last Saturday near the Shamrock Hotel. Mrs Balfour deposed that she was driving out on Saturday afternoon, accompanied by her nurse. On her return home she was giving her horse a drink at the trough of the Shamrock Hotel when she saw a horse and cart coming at a furious rate about half-a-mile distant from the Shamrock. there was a man in the cart, and he seemed to be leaning forward on the shaft of the dray, apparently to catch the reins. He fell immediately after, on the near side in front of the cart wheel. which passed over him. The horse galloped by witness, and turned up by the Shamrock Hotel where it stopped. The man attempted to rise twice; he raised himself but fell down again. Witness acquainted Mr Smith, the landlord of the Shamrock Hotel, with what happened. Mr Smith raised deceased up. Witness came into town and gave information of the accident.
William Elias Bulled, a boy 13 years of age, son of the deceased, deposed that he accompanied his father last Saturday. The were returning home in the cart, when on nearing the railway crossing, this side of the Shamrock, the horse shied and bolted away at full gallop. The reins got under the horse's tail, and the animal commenced kicking. Witness was pitched out, but was not hurt, and ran after the cart. When witness next saw his father he was lying on his back, breathing very hard, and appearing to be quite insensible. There was a blue mark across his chest, and it appeared that the cart-wheel had gone over it. Witness left Mr Smith with his father and went to look after the horse. His father had no drink that day, and was not accustomed to drink. He was 45 years of age.
John Pearce Smith, landlord of the Shamrock Hotel, deposed that he lifted deceased up twice. He was breathing very hard, and was unable to speak or move. One of his legs was broken. There was a wheel mark over his chest. There was a town cab passing at the time, in which a lady and gentleman were seated, who kindly got out. Deceased was put into the cab, and witness accompanied him to Napier, and took him to Dr Spencer, who advised his being taken immediately to the hospital, Dr Spencer saying that he would follow. Deceased died on reaching the hospital. He was a temperate man, A verdict of 'accidental death' was returned
