Any info on WAITAI....

Journal by Jamesnthmiddle

My mother is Pakimaero WAITAI, the youngest of 17 and the only one living. Her parents were Ware Pukenamu WAITAI and Miriama Te Hei HEKETA. My granfather was born 12th September 1877, unsure where.
His father was Waitai HOHEPA of Masterton

As far as we know Grandad was from Te Ore Ore, Masterton, and went to school at Papawai before leaving for Te Aute College. Date of entry noted as 5th February 1890.

I would be grateful for any information/links to the WAITAI, HOHEPA,
TE PU names of my grandad. I know we go north from around Hokianga to Te Hapua, just not sure how.

Your first step for finding Whakapapa The Whakapapa Club

Birth, Death & Marriage - Historical Records of New Zealand

Archives of New Zealand - Te Rua Mahara o te Kāwanatanga

Rootschat register as a new user, free site, then scroll down to their 'Research in other countries' board and post a lookup request at their 'New Zealand' childboard.

It's also surprising that Whanau can be found on Facebook, Bebo, and Pipl Search Australia.

The New Zealand Society of Genealogists is a great resource. There would be many records for your WAITAI family: school enrolment, treaty, marriages, Wills, etc.

Apologies for third link (Archives of New Zealand), seems that certain keyboard characters don't translate.

You're welcome. Think about storing your precious family tree data somewhere. I highly recommend downloading Personal Ancestral File available freely from the LDS Church Database FamilySearch. This will in turn create a GEDCOM file where all your genealogical data can be interpreted into any family tree package that you choose to use for example FamilyTreeMaker etc. Then put your family tree online at say Geni. I just did a search of Geni and there are 24 Waitai family members who have trees online there.

Best wishes.
PS My hubby is a Kiwi with Maori and Pakeha forebears.
