Hi, Do you know what year John Cleland was born. Most of my ancestors come from around that area. From Yackandandah unto Eskdale. I might have some information as my Auntie died recently and there is 2 boxes with history on the Cleland family

regards

Sheryll

John Cleland is my paternal great great grandfather and was born in 1829 in Lanarkshire, Scotland. His parents were William Cleland and Elizabeth Walker with William accompanying John and wife Mary (McFadyen) to Australia (after Elizabeth died I suspect) and at least one child on the voyage from Scotland. Hope this helps after 4 years of no reply.

John Cleland, the father of James Cleland, was born in about 1831 in the village of Newarthill near Holytown (outside Motherwell), Bothwell Parish, Lanarkshire, Scotland. He was still living in this village in 1841 at the age of 10 with his parents William Cleland and Elizabeth Walker and his brothers and sister. He married Mary McFadyen on 15 Dec 1848 on Isle of Tiree, Argyllshire, Scotland, the birthplace of Mary McFadyen. On 30 March 1851 they were living at Cleland-Townhead Row(Street) @ Holytown, Bothwell Parish, Lanarkshire, Scotland with their 1 day old son William, after having lost 2 children previously. Living with them was John’s older brother William, both brothers working as iron-miners. In about 1853 John travelled to Victoria to join the gold-rush, with his older brother William and his younger brother James.

A second son, John, was born on 9 Apr 1853. It is not known if he was born before or after his father left for Victoria.

In 1855 Mary and their 2 sons travelled from Scotland to join John in Victoria and arrived in Victoria in October 1855.

John’s widowed father William, and his sister Elizabeth, travelled from Scotland to Victoria in 1857 with Elizabeth’s new husband James Pollock arriving in Victoria on 24 Dec 1857.

John Cleland is buried in a grave in the Presbyterian section of Yackandandah Cemetery with both of his wives, 3 of his sons, his father William and his brother William. In an adjoining grave is buried his sister Elizabeth, her husband James Pollock, and one of their sons.
