Hi Tonkin I have info that John Fly died in 1907 aged 73 and is buried in the Bendigo Cemetery - info Mon G1 19386

John Fly whose brothers were Charles and William, sister Elizabeth, came to Australia on the SS Recruit arriving 1853. He was born in 1834 and died in Bendigo in 1926. His children were: John Moys 1858, Mary 1860, Elizabeth 1864, Charles James 1866 and James Bevan 1868. James Bevan's son Maurice and daughter Alma changed their surname to Lancaster. Later James Bevan did the same. He was named James Bevan after the husband of Elizabeth Fly (sister of John, Charles & William). Both James and Elizabeth died on their way back to Australia from a visit home to Wales and England. The ship they were aboard sank in the Bay of Biscay.

Thank you Lewisfly.

Always wondered what happened to James and Elizabeth.
Do you know what happened to their children?

by Flyfamily on 2013-06-21 07:33:34

Hi Lewis I was wondering if the ages recorded on the recruit are correct. John is listed as 35, Mary as 31 and John 19, Charles 17, William 16 and Elizabeth 13. Were John and Mary the parents, because they would have been 14 and 12 when they had Charles?

Hi Tonkin And Lewis. After the parents died, their 2 surviving children James Alfred and Mary Sophye lived with grandparents then went to live with James senior's brother in Wales, who came to Australia to collect them after he was married. He later became captain of Wales, playing Rugby and the James Bevan Trophy was named after him commemorating the 100th anniversary of matches between Australia and Wales. He became a vicar after studying law at Cambridge and also had 11 children of his own.James Senior owned a Cobb and Co coach line and built a large mansion in Caulfield. Details of the horrendous shipwreck are on various websites. Just Google James and Elisabeth Bevan or The Rugby History Society or SS London.

Thank you Flyfamily. That explains why they did not appear on the Australian records again. Glad to know they did not die with their parents.

And thank you for taking the time to chase up and link the Clifton History janilye.
Much appreciated.

Cheers.
