Getting Started
It is going to be a tough haul. I have a good GEDCOM from my Aunt Evelyn on one side of my family; but my mother's side is going to be tough. Trying to locate records is tough.

Dear thomasfwilliams, Welcome. The best advice I can give you is to upload your GEDCOM to say Geni. Free site, with the option of upgrading to GeniPro. You can invite your living relatives electronically to the tree via their email addresses.
If you are researching common and popular surnames like WILLIAMS and ADAMS it is best to research spousal names first.
And remember without documentation, your genealogy research becomes mythology.
You have a number of resources at your disposal already ... just mentioning a few: the Genforums, Rootschat, FamilySearch and Rootsweb.
EDITOR.
