Civil registration was not required until 1856. Perhaps the death certificates of William or James Ward show the father's date of death.

OBITUARY.
THE LATE MRS. JUDITH McKENNA.

On Sunday last there passed away at the residence of her son in-law,
Mr. G. C. Reynolds, Mrs. Judith McKenna at the patriarchal age of 83 years.
The cause of death was heart failure supervening on bronchial trouble.
The subject of our notice was a native of Sussex (England), and came to this State when
but six years of age, remaining here until the end.
She was for some years a resident of Wellington where she was widely esteemed, coming to
this district only about two years ago.
The deceased lady was twice married, and of the first union two sons survive her, viz., Messrs. W. Ward (Queensland), and J. Ward (Branxton, Newcastle), and of the second leaves issue Messrs. H. McKenna (Wellington), R. D. McKenna (Penrith), Mesdames Cameron (wife of Sub-Inspector Cameron, of Lismore) and Reynolds (wife of Mr. George C. Reynolds, one of the proprietors of our contemporary, the "Guardian ".
We tender the sorrowing relatives our heartfelt sympathy in their sad bereavement.
The funeral took place on Monday to the local cemetery, Rev. John Parr officiating at the grave.

The Reece Family whom I believe came from Peasmarsh in East Sussex, left Gravesend on 20 October 1838 on board the Juliana
The Juliana was shipwrecked near Capetown, and the surviving passengers arrived in Australia on April/May 1839 on board the Morayshire.
Onboard was father Isaac REECE 34, his wife Frances 30 who died in Capetown; then Isaac 10, Judith age 8, Edwin age 4, Henry 2yrs. 3 mths died at sea and an infant, Jaber, born at sea on the 12 January 1839
The Morayshire, Captain Lamotte,Surgeon Mr. Shaw, from the Cape of Good Hope 20th February. arrived in Sydney with merchandise and 108 emigrants from the shipwrecked Juliana. The residue of the emigrants from the Juliana were to be forwarded on the Mary Hay.
Isaac snr. remarried Sally Ann SIMS in Sydney in 1840.

I am not a relative but I found this story interesting. Now that we have newspapers online it's a whole new ball game. On 4th October 1853 the body of John Ward was found dead at the house of George Young, Clarence Street, Sydney, near the Crispin Arms hotel. The coroner found he died of intemperance. The newspaper article is easy to find on Trove. His friend said he had a wife and had left her. If he was a drinker she may have thrown him out, which would explain why she didn't send the police to look for him. She must have had independent means of support. As John Ward was also using the name John Maxwell the coroner had to decide which name to register the death under. John Maxwell was the one, and you can find the certificate on NSW BD&M. On 21st October 1853 a Supreme Court notice was placed in the newspaper, asking for any relatives, or a wife, of John Ward, to come forward, as he possessed some assets to be distributed. By then it had somehow been established that the correct name was John Ward, not John Maxwell. If any relatives decide to purchase the death certificate of "John Maxwell" (John Ward) I would love to see a copy. Louise catballou at aapt.net.au
