Thank you for letting me know about your grandfather's family in the Essex County area. Most of my father's family (Bropheys) have and continue to live in the southern Ontario area (Parkhill, Grand Bend, London). I checked the Brophey family history that my father's aunt documented in the 70's. She included the three Brophy brothers who came to Canada from Ireland (James, Thomas and David) after the Irish rebellion in the 1800's. She only knew that David changed the spelling of Brophy to Brophey when he arrived in Candada. I only have the Brophey history document in hard copy but I plan to convert it to electronic form- I'll send you a copy if you like.

Hey Alison Brophey how about that! I am a Brophey of the umbrella kind. They manufactured these umbrellas in Montreal and Toronto in 1920's - 1940's? aprox. It was my grandfather? I have to check, maybe great grandfather. I collect those umbrellas as well. They also made dolls. Weird but whatever, takes one to know one. They also had some funny businesses in Brantford Ontario such as lightening rod salesmen (!) Sorry I don't know Jean Brophey. This is some of the history I have about the Brophey family. Edward Brophey born in 1831 in St. Hallair Ireland. Married Rotha Fidelia Adams ( daughter of John Adams President of the U.S.A) on Oct 7, 1861 Boston Mass. They moved to Brantford Ont. in 1863. He died Sept 28, 1888, there is a Brophey Monument in one of the cemeteries there. Sorry I don't know which one. They had four children Fred born in the U.S., William Allard, Frank, and Grace all born in Canada. This is my side of the family. William Allard born Feb. 19, 1869 Brantford Ont. Married Mary Janet Miller May 24, 1892, He died in London Ont. on May 24, 1953. I am a little short on time today so I will continue the history at a later date.

Here's the actual history of the Brophey family which may be of interest to you... Edward Brophey was born in 1831 in St Hellier, on the island of Jersey. His parents Peter and Catharine brought him to Embro, Ontario along with his brother Michael in 1833. Shortly after arriving in Embro, Peter died and his wife Catharine re-married a gentleman by the name of Walsh. Once Edward and Michael had become young men they made their way to Brantford. There Edward met and married the lovely Rotha Fidelia Adams, daughter of Francis P. Adams. Francis Porter Adams and his wife Abigail Fidelia Burt had arrived in Brantford with their children from Massachusetts and/or Vermont in 1863.
Francis Adams father was indeed named John however he was not president of the United States. He was born in Ashburnham and married Susanna Whitney in Ashby in 1808. They settled in North Adams, Berkshire, Mass.where the had 7 children, one of which was Francis who married Rotha etc. Anyhow Edward and Rotha had 8 children, 4 of which died as children (which can be found in the family plot at Greenwood Cemetary in Brantford) and 4 as you named: Fred, William Allard, Francis E., and Grace Isobel. William married Mary Janet Millar (with an "a" by the way) and thats all for me for now!

My grandfather was Allard F.Brophey son of Willian Allard and he owned the umbrella company in montreal. W.A. Brophey LTD umbrella company. My mother Helen Brophey is still alive and I remember visiting the factory when I was younger.

My grandfather was Rowland E. Brophey and was the west coast rep. of the W.A. Brophey Co. in Vancouver B.c. having moved west from Ontario. My mother Wilhelmina Francis Brophey is his oldest daughter (90), along with sister Irene and Eleanor, (deceased).
My middle name is Rowland, after Baba, which he was affectionately known. He passed away in 1963 if I remember correctly.
The company sold umbrellas, belts and ties of which a few I still have. Mom has a very old picture of a Millar wearing a kilt and a tall bear fur hat from the regiment he belonged to---he's my greatgrandfather (5 times).

I was told that Margaret Brophy came from Ireland durning the Potato Famine. We heard that while sailing to Canada Margaret Brophys mother died. Than we heard that the famous explorer Capt. Bob bartletts Family took her in and raised her. They lived in Brigus NFLD. SHe married William Hanrahan either in NFLD or Cape Breton. They raised their family in MacKays Corner Sydney Nova Scotia. They had Ten children, 3 girls and seven boys. My grandfather Edward Hanrahan died young leaving 5 children behind. If anyone has any information that will help me to find more about my great grandmother Margaret Brophy It would be greatly apprecitiated. Thanks

Alison, I come from a long line of Brophey's from Windsor, Ontario. My great great uncle was once the Mayor and my family also assited with the construction of the tunnel under the Detroit River. Most of the near genration men on were named William, each adding the previous generations middle name, making my brother William Thomas Henry Kenneth Brophey. My Grandmother's name is Mary Evelyn Brophey. I have boxes of newspaper articles and obituaries if you think somehow our families are connected.

While it looks like you may be related to some of the others who have posted here, I'm not familiar with any of the names you listed. If it is true that the Brophy brothers came from Ireland in the 1800's and some of them changed their name to Brophey, I can't imagine that we're nt related in some way but I just can't seem to make the connection...

it looks like Karen and I may be related, it seems her Grandfather and my Great Uncle are the same person! Part of our family is also the Kettlewell, also from Windsor. On the Brophey side we have Pauline, Florence, Henry, Betty and William.

If my memory is correct I believe my great grandfather Allard Frederick born 1895 from Montreal owned an Umbrella company. He married Olive Duffett. They had 4 children, William Frederick, my gradfather, twin girls Mary Helen & Olive Elizabeth, and John Allard.
I have a family tree that dates back to 1789 to John Adams, 2nd president of the United States.

Just reading all of the previous comments and it may appear that the information I have regarding John Adams may be incorrect...not sure. My grandfather, William Frederick Brophey, did a lot of research on this. I have photos of everyone from John Adams forward.

I am an Australian descendant of Matthew Brophey who married an Irish emigrant to Australia, Ellen Buckley. In my family we also have a legend about two brothers one of whom changes his name to Brophey. I would like to trace Matthew Brophey back to Ireland.
