My Grandmother was Florence Chapman -she married the Rev. Thomas Hammond Strong in South Africa. My father (Thomas Frederick Leonard Strong was born in Pretoria in 1914). The Chapman's were 1820 settlers and I believe Florence's Grandfather was Harold and her father was Frederick Chapman (who made his fortune in the SA gold fields). I understand there is also a family link to the King family (if you are familiar with South African history you will know of Dick King) and also a link to Rochfort Maguire who I understand was connected to Cecil Rhodes in some way. I will be posting a journal based on my father's research into the Strong Family .
Hope this helps
David Strong

I also meant to add that my Grandmother had several brothers & sisters: Fredrick Jnr. (a stock broker), Olive who married Harold Hooper (founder of Hooper Motors in Durban), Charlotte who narried into the Mitchell family (after living in Kenya they opened the East Africa Pavillion Restaurant in Jo'burg), Letty married into the Turner family.

I am researching my family tree and have found various 'Strong's in my lineage. I know that Revd Thomas Hammond Strong was a relation of my father's and was Rector of Sandy in Bedfordshire England from 1920 -1946. They had two sons in England (registered at Biggleswade) Peter F Strong Sep 1920, Michael Stuart Strong Sep 1923. Michael died at Casino in WW2 1944 and there is a memorial to him at Lancing College Sussex. Text see (http://www.hambo.org/lancing/view_man.php?id=91).
I am trying to find my family link to the Strongs. My father William Ernest Quick (1907 -1980) did refer to 'Great Uncle Tom' at Sandy, but that is all I know.
Two of my great grandmothers were Strong sisters. Emily Sarah Strong (1842 - 1902?) who married a Henry Quick. Mary Ann Strong(1841 - ?) married a George Brown. Subsequently their children married (Thomas Henry Quick and Alice Maud Mary Brown) and gave birth to my father.
I believe the Stron sisters parents were Thomas Charles Strong(1818-?0 and Ann Bauly or Banly. Their children were Mary Ann (1841) Emily Sarah (1842) Thomas G (1844) Susannah (1846) Elizabeth (1851) Alice E (1853)

Following your posting on Family Circles ?I?m not sure if the following will help your research?
My father was Thomas Frederick Leonard Strong (born in Pretoria South Africa), son of Thomas Hammond Strong the rector of Sandy, Bedfordshire. My father had two brothers, Peter Francis Strong and Michael Stuart Strong (who was killed at Monte Casino in May 1944) and one sister Mary Stuart Strong. I do not know about the link to the Quick?s ?I have a copy of a birth certificate dated 25th July 1844 for my Great-great-grandfather Thomas George Strong -his father was also a Thomas Strong (a cab driver) and his mother is shown as Ann Strong formerly Bauly (or possibly Bauty) ?she was probably illiterate (since she signed the birth certificate with an X). It appears that Thomas George Strong (my Great-grandfather) became a Church of England clergyman ?I recall my father saying that Thomas George had been married 3 times (I?m not sure how many children he had). I have a copy of a Marriage Certificate dated 19th June 1874 between Thomas George Strong and Mary Ann Hammond. However, there are certain oddities about this Marriage Certificate ?the Certificate states that the groom (Thomas George Strong) is a Baptist Minister and it states that his (deceased) father (Thomas Strong) was a Gentleman (which doesn?t square with the birth certificate which states he was a cabbie!). My Great-grandfather was the incumbent of a number of Church of England parish?s including, between 1890 to 1990, the parish of Willington in Derbyshire (again, it is odd that his marriage certificate states he was a Baptist Minister!). My Grandfather (Thomas Hammond Strong) was born on the 1st July 1880 (possibly in Clovelly, Devon). There are a number of aspects associated with our family history in the mid to late 1800?s which are inconsistent and there is apparently a ?dark-secret? which a cousin was sworn to secrecy over ?she died some years ago, so neither my brother or I know what it is. If you send me an email with your email address to dstrong@hotmail.co.uk I would be pleased to send you a copy of the Certificates.
