Manawatu Standard, 19 May 1920 DIVORCE
Desertion was the ground of the petition by Argia Calcinai for dissolution of her marriage with Joseph Victor Calcinai. Mr H. R. Cooper appeared for petitioner and the case was not defended. The parties are Italians.
Mrs Calcinai deposed that she was married at Wellington in 1885, where she and her husband lived for a time, there being four children of the marriage. Later, she and her husband did not get on very well together and ultimately he left her, an agreement being made that he should pay £2 per week towards her maintenance (equivalent in 2010 to $158). Her husband subsequently disappeared and one of her sons afterwards received a letter from him from Leghorn Italy. She had not received any communication from him since, or any maintenance. She had since heard that respondent was in Auckland.
Duilio Calcinai, son of the parties, stated that he had met his father in Auckland at Christmas time and he had no intention then of returning to his wife. The last payment made by respondent towards petitioner's maintenance was in 1908.
