... GREY RIVER ANGUS, 17 July 1896 - Thursday's West Coast Times reports a fatal accident at Rimu township yesterday afternoon resulted in the very sudden death of Mr William Pryor, a well known resident of Ross. It appears that Mr Pryor, who lately commenced storekeeping at Ross after years of mining, was returning home from Hokitika driving in a spring cart with a load of goods drawn by one horse. The trap was heavily laden and the horse had been proceeding at a walking pace, when it suddenly took fright, and broke into a trot. In the effort to steady the beast Mr Pryor appears to have pulled one rein only, with the result that the horse swerved suddenly to the roadside, and the occupant was thrown out, falling on a small heap of stones. Before he had time to recover himself the wheel of the cart passed over the unfortunate man, going up his back and over his head. The result was almost sudden death. The police were at once communicated with and medical aid summoned, but the injuries were beyond human aid, and death resulted in a few minutes. An inquest will be held at Lamacroft's hotel at 10 o'clock this morning

... WEST COAST TIMES, 28 January 1904. Death has removed another well known citizen from our midst in the person of the late Mr William Pryor, who has been suffering from an incurable disease for about three years past, and whose earthly sufferings were ended in the early hours of Monday morning. The late Mr Pryor had up to the time of his illness followed the occupation of a miner, and was a man of quiet and unobtrusive habits. Much sympathy is expressed for the mourning relatives - Mrs Pryor and her sons and daughters - in the loss of a son and brother (does not say father so the Mrs Pryor was probably his mother). The funeral took place at 9 o'clock on Tuesday morning, the services at the graveside being conducted by the Rev H. E. Newton
