WAS CHARLES DANIEL OF "NARBONNE", SHIRE OF BULLA, AT RED HILL TOO? (VIC., AUST.)

Charles Daniel of "Narbonne" in Oakland Rd (Melway 177 K 4) and his descendants are described in detail in I.W.Symonds' "Bulla Bulla", D.F.Cameron-Kennedy's "The Oakland Hunt" and "The Daniel Family". One of the Madden girls from the Inverness Hotel at Oaklands Junction married one of his sons and two of his descendants were Shire Secretaries of Bulla Shire.
Charles Daniel was leasing 60 acres from B.Ringrose (18B Kangerong, roughly Melway 190 K 1) in 1879. Was this Charles from "Narbonne" or a son of his? It would seem ridiculous to have farms so far apart but there have been so many historical connections between the area near Tullamarine and the Mornington Peninsula that it is reasonable to pose the question. The Orrs of Kia Ora (Melway 5 J5) and Tommy Loft of Dalkeith (Melway 15 H2) both farmed (1917, 1920) the same 323 acres that is now the residential area of the St Andrews Golf Course (crown allotments 28 and 29, section A, Wannaeue) at Melway 252 C7.
Percy Hurren, who was the postmaster and storekeeper at Jones Corner, Moorooduc (Melway 146 K6)in 1950 became the last farmer on Dalkeith in 1951.

itellya on 2012-09-17 00:46:17Thinking that I might have been lazy in my transcription of the 1879-80 rates, not recording the addresses of those assessed, I checked the records on microfiche at the Rosebud Library. There was no space for addresses in those early ratebooks. I might point out that I had never seen the Daniel surname in my countless hours of inspecting the rate records.
In the assessment of 27-7-1878, Job Sherwood was leasing the block from Ringrose and in the records for 1880, 1881 etc, there was no mention of Ringrose as an owner or a 60 acre block. It seems that 18B had been absorbed into a larger landholding but not Henry Dunn's "Four Winds" as he had 233 acres in both 1879 and 1880. The sale of 18B would explain why Charles Daniel leased it for only one year.
itellya on 2015-04-22 07:37:23It occurred to me that the surname of Charles Daniel might have actually been Daniels and that he could have been a Keilor Village pioneer.
In an effort to find the name of Mary Daniel's husband I found that masses were conducted at Narbonne from 1852 till 1876.
In 1852, the first Masses in the parish were celebrated at the home of Mary Daniel. Her home, named ‘Narbonne’, was on Oaklands Road, Oaklands Junction, a little north of Woodlands at the northern boundary of Melbourne airport. These Masses continued until 1876, when the weatherboard church of St Michael, now demolished, was built in Bulla.

Then I realised that the quickest way to find the name of Mary's husband was to consult my DICTIONARY HISTORY OF TULLAMARINE AND MILES AROUND scanned page after page onto computer files by John Shorten,a monumental effort!
D.10. John Denis Daniel was born in London on 5-2-1795 and married Mary Swiney at St John's CHURCH OF ENGLAND* on 5-7-1824. John and Mary had fourteen children,namely John,James Denis, Peter Augustine, Francis,Frederick,Charles, Lois Septimus, Henry Octavius, Mary,Mark Edmund,Elizabeth Anne,Edmund Felix (died at 8 months), twins Joseph Vincent and Alfred Oswald, and Catherine.
Mary's husband died on 13-3-1847 leaving her a 43 year old widow. Children 4,5,7 and 8 sailed for Melbourne in SLAINS CASTLE in 1850 and Mary and the rest of her children arrived at Port Phillip Heads on 26-2-1852 aboard the ATHENIAN, one of Caroline Chisholm's ships. Mary bought 108 acres from Tulip Wright and they moved into the newly-built two storeyed "Narbonne" on 7-7-1852.

Mary's son, Charles took over Narbonne in 1881 when his mother moved to Wolverton near Stratford. This makes it possible that he was an early orchardist or vigneron near Red Hill in 1879.

*An attempt to find why John and Mary married in an Anglican church was unsuccessful but did result in finding a website containing photos of John Denis Daniel, Mary (nee Swiney) and all of their children, possibly posted by the author of the new family history launched at the 2015 family reunion.

The Red Hill resident in 1879. might have been a son of Charles Daniels of Keilor but he couldn't have been the father. There is no Charles Daniels Jnr buried at Keilor.
