William Lutton & Mary Davidson of Newry, Ireland Part I
My Brick Wall is William Lutton of Newry, Ireland (c 1875-1845). I'm not going to dwell too much on him in this post as there are other brick walls I have come across while researching the Lutton line.
My father was Ian McLeod Lutton (b NZ, 1935 and d NZ, 1968). His father was Norman John Lutton (b NZ, 1905 and d, NZ, 1962). His father was John Lutton (b NZ, 1878 and d NZ. 1958). His father was George Lutton (b 1822, Newry, Ireland and d 1892, NSW, Australia). His father was William, one of my brick walls.
When Mary Lutton (nee Davidson) died in 1873 (NSW, Australia) her death certificate listed four males and one female living, and one male and two females deceased. The four males living are:
John Lutton (1812-1903), Robert Lutton (1820-1908), George Lutton (1822-1892) and David Lutton (1835-1894). The surviving female is Julia Lutton (1833-1892). Of the three deceased issue I have found Rachel Lutton (1810-1899) who married Joseph Curran/Currans in Newry in 1827 and then Timothy Whelan in Victoria, Australia in 1887. I have a copy of Rachel's marriage certificate to Timothy Whelan which lists William and Mary as her parents and that she was widowed in 1866. I can only assume that at the time of Mary's death the NSW Lutton's were not aware that Rachel was in Australia.
The Sydney Morning Herald published an obituary for John Lutton when he died ( A Pioneer Ironfounder - 25 February 1903). The obituary states that when the Luttons came to Australia there was the mother (Mary), five sons and two daughters -"all of whom were good colonists, dying here, except for one son who left for California in 1849".
I know that John, George, David, Julia & Rachel all died in Australia. Robert went to California where he died in 1908 (have sighted death notice in the San Francisco Call 7 March 1908, have found his grave in the Cypress Lawn Cemetery and sighted the California Death Index 1905-1929).
So I'm left with an unknown male who died in Australia and an unknown female who died probably in Ireland.
In Ancestry.com there are three options that keep appearing throughout the public trees:
William (1817-1898), Thomas (1819- ), Margaret (1822-1866). Only William appears in any FamilySearch (LDS) trees.
George's death notice (SMH 9 August 1892) stated that he was the third son of William & Mary of Crieve, Newry. This would mean that the unknown deceased male would have had to have been born after George and probably before David. In 2002 a researcher posted an item about the Luttons on geneaology.com. This post included both William and Thomas as being sons of William & Mary. A response was posted referencing William Lutton as having come to South Australia in 1851 with his wife Jane Brown and having died in 1854 of TB. I did find a death index for William Lutten having died in Adelaide in 1854 but as parents names were not recorded at that time I have not purchased the death certificate to prove.
The same researcher noted that Robert and Thomas both went to California but Thomas came back to Australia & New Zealand. I have found an entry into Australia from San Francisco for a Thomas Lutton in December 1852 (arriving on the Asa Packer) but have been unable to find anything after that.
Margaret (1822-1866) appears in a few trees on Ancestry. I am pretty sure that she is not the missing female as I purchased her death certificate and there was no information on it at all. I'm also sure that if she was of the Newry Luttons she would have been living with her mother and sister. One other note about Margaret (1822-1866), a few researchers have listed her as arriving in Australia in 1842 aboard the Champion with her uncle William Lutton. After researching the Luttons who arrived on the Champion, it turns out that Margaret was his daughter and she was still in alive in 1873 when William passed away.
So those are my two brick walls regarding the issue of William and Mary Lutton of Newry, Ireland.
