Looking for James HAYDEN Convict sent to Australia on the Third Fleet 1791

Query by Jenn888

Does anyone know anything about James Hayden b. 1761 in Staffordshire England? He was tried and convicted in Staffordhsire on 30th July 1788 and sentenced to 7 years transportation to Australia aboard the 'Matilda' in 1791 with the Third Fleet. I cannot find any record of what he was convicted of.

It appears that he was sent to Norfolk Island first, as he did not arrive in Port Jackson until four years later. He married another convict, Mary Keen (alias Jane Kane) on board the ship 'Glatton' on her arrival in Port Jackson in 1803. THey had 6 children and setteld in the Campbelltown area of NSW. James died in 1820.

I would apprecaite any help in discovering what he was convicted of - or being pointed in the right direction to find his trial record from Staffordshire.

Hi Jenny,

I am descended from James Haydon but havent been doing any research on him. I cannot find any trace of his marriage but had 5 children, from marriage to Mary Keen/Jane Kane. A start could be to register on www.ancestry.com.au and have a look at a few of the convict registers or you can order a convict record of James from NSW archives but other than that I cant think of any other possibilities,

Regards,
Sam

Hi Jenny.
I have Haydens in my Family but they arrived as free settlers. I had trouble finding their arrival as they were in Victoria but were listed as arriving in S.A. This site may help you (don't be put off by Queensland) I have made a lot of use of this site. So much easier these days as so much more is online. https://www.data.qld.gov.au/dataset/british-convict-registers/resource/dbcfa4a6-3ec7-4264-bcee-43b21a470d34

Good Luck
Julie
