He enlisted with the first party of New Zealander's which landed at Gallipoli, since then he had been twice wounded and finally met his death in the last great dash of the New Zealander's at Anzac [AWN 02.12.1915].

Subsequently he took a position on one of the Sydney wharves which he occupied for five or six years before joining the Australian Expeditionary Force. His brother Ivan is serving with the third NZ reinforcements and the two brothers met in Egypt on Good Friday" - killed in action 27th April 1915, Eric is listed on Panel 23 of the Memorial at Lone Pine
