The VMI records Emily's birth place as Devonshire. I have not searched for John or Emily's death but will have a look tomorrow and let you know if I come up with anything.

Do you know if your John Fletcher had the middle name Clifton?

You're right there Tonkin. I just found this marriage notice in the Melbourne Argus dated 20 March 1867 tells you her father's name and where she was from.

FLETCHER-CHAFFE.-On the 12th inst.,at Enoch's Point, Big River, by the Rev. T. Vipont, John Fletcher, third son of the lato Josiah Fletcher, Esq., of Manchester, England, to Emily, third daughter of the late Edward Chaffe. Esq., Devonshire, England. Home papers please copy.

Would they have moved to sydney and had these other children besides the two you mentioned? asking because of the gap in birthdates. If so the mother Emily who was nee Chaffe died in 1929 Sydney Father Edward mother Emiline

I just looked through Basil's papers again. He didn't state his father was deceased when he enlisted 6 September 1914 The 'Father deceased' was added by Base Records in 1921 after Basil was killed. Mother Emily's address on enlistment was 1.'Seacombe' Oconnor St, Haberfield then 2. Forrest St Haberfield and lastly 51 Raglan St Mosman.
Gives father's name as John Clifton Fletcher.
Here is reg of death NSW -

This maybe a coincidence. I could be on the wrong bus, but at least you have some tools to have a further look.

I have the right family. I'm certain.
Emily Flaurence Maud called herself Maude. Amongst Basil's records are letters from her enquiring about her brother and signing them Mrs. Maude Gascoigne-Roy. Here is her death Reg.
27359/1941 GASCOIGNE-ROY MAUDE EMILINE F JOHN CLIFTON EMILINE NORTH SYDNEY
The above shows Mother with the given name Emiline

Also amongst Basil's papers is a receipt signed by his mother Mrs Emily Fletcher and witnessed by her son Ernest Fletcher.
This ties Basil to Emily and Ernest as well as father, John and mother Emily.

So I suppose we are now looking for a birth date for Emiline or Emily CHAFFE in Devonshire. Here is the death date for Emiline or Emily Fletcher in Sydney. with the parents Edward and Emiline.

Easier than finding Ann BIRD.

Well done Jan. Your on the ball.

I think Emily's parents will be Edward CHAFFE and Emline TREMILL.

And it looks like Emily had a few siblings. Will put a few things together as the day goes on.

It's taken a full day of record searchers but I think all your questions will be answered when you view the CHAFFE Posts I put up today. It turns out Emily's parents also came to Australia and had their last child in Victoria in 1856.

It took a bit of time ... but we got there.
