Welcome indra.

If Elizabeth arrived in South Australia with her parents at a young age the chances are she was simply recorded on the records as 'child' of. The records may simply state: YOUNG. John and wife with three children, so to assist with searches you need to include parents names, and the number of children they had when they arrived in South Australia.

If you are unable to assist with the above family details you may be able to supply Elizabeth's year of birth and father's name. It's also possible the family arrived in another state before going to South Australia.

Cheers.

Thank you. The only thing I know about her is that she was married at Normanville S.A. in 1864. She had at least 2 brothers also living in Australia and she came from a town just over the Scottish border. She was a nurse and I think she worked in the U.K. before she came out here. Never occurred to me that she may have come here as a child. I'll go back to my Mother again and ask her, but she has Alzheimer's so doesn't always get things right.

This may be Elizabeth's marriage.

Groom: Peter THOMAS.
Age: 22 years.
Father: William THOMAS.

Bride: Elizabeth YOUNG.
Age: 22 years.
Father: William YOUNG.

Date married: 05 April 1864.
Place: Trinity Church, Adelaide, South Australia.

This is the only Elizabeth YOUNG married in South Australia in 1864.
Going by her age when married she was born circa 1842, and her father's name was William. If Elizabeth arrived in South Australia circa 1850 she would have been about eight years old when she arrived. This would also indicate she did not work as a nurse in the U.K. before she came to Australia.

Working with the above details I'm now looking for a William YOUNG with a daughter and two sons arriving in South Australia circa 1850.

We have a marriage certificate of Ann Young, age 21, married to Henry BACCHUS on 8th. August, 1864. Frederick YOUNG, a farmer from Bald Hills signed as a witness. I don't know whether he was her Father or her Brother. Although she signed as Ann Young, her full name was Elizabeth Ann Young. I can't find anything about her before that.
Regards

I was just about to tell you I found the arrival date for William YOUNG and his family but I was looking for the wrong family.

I do have the marriage for Ann YOUNG and Henry BACCHUS in 1864 but I was looking for the marriage of Elizabeth YOUNG and not Ann YOUNG.

Groom: Henry BACCUSH.
Age: 24 years.
Father: Henry BACCHUS.

Bride: Ann YOUNG.
Age: 21 years.
Father: Joseph YOUNG.

Date married: 08 August 1864.
Place: Wesleyan Chapel, Normanville, South Australia.

The witness Frederick YOUNG may have been her brother.

OK, I'm now looking for Joseph YOUNG with three or more children arriving in South Australia circa 1850.

Thanks for the correct marriage details. This makes a big difference.

Sorry Tonkin. I thought when she came on a ship it would probably have had her full name.

That's not a problem indra.

Sorry to say I have been unable to find a record for Joseph YOUNG arriving in South Australia. The passenger lists I located online only go to 1851, so it's possible the family arrived after 1851. The official passenger lists are held by the State Library in South Australia but it appears these are not available online and a visit to the library is required.

While searching the South Australian birth records I noticed Henry and Elizabeth had ten children. In the birth records Elizabeth was recorded as Ann YOUNG, Annie YOUNG and Eliza Ann YOUNG. The only time she was recorded as Elizabeth Ann was when she died in 1928.

This marriage may be of interest to you.

It's possible this is the same Fredrick YOUNG named as witness to Elizabeth's marriage in 1864. He was born circa 1836 and his father was also named Joseph.

Groom: Friedrick YOUNG.
Age: 23 years.
Father: Joseph YOUNG.

Bride: Elizabeth MADDICKS.
Age: 24 years.
Father: Michael MADDICKS.

Date married: 02 August 1859.
Place: St Mary Church, Sturt, South Australia.

The spelling of Friederick changes to Fredrick in the birth records.
The name MADDICKS appears to be a typo error and should be MADDOCKS.

Fredrick and Elizabeth had six children, including one at Bald Hills.

Thanks Tonkin. I think that is one of the family. There was definitely another brother in Australia as well. I will keep looking.
