Thomas J Thompson

Query by Swamigo

Thomas Jefferson Thompson according to Attestation papers from Canada BEF was born 27 March 1891 in Birmingham England. His father was called William and he was a Salvationist.

I am looking for military history which is only available in Canada or Census history between 1891 and 1920. Who was he, was he married to Pearl as shown in the 1920 Census or were they just living together. Did he divorce Pearl as he married my Grandmother in England in 1920. His Mother or Father was not English, we believe there was a connection with Spain. Any help from USA, Texas region or Canada re Military would be appreciated. Thank you.

On the 1920 USA Census it shows immigration date of 1889 born 1891 England, parents both born in England.

Do you have a copy of the marriage to your Grandmother? was her name Winifred?

I can trace a Thomas Thompson b 1889 Warwickshire Father William & mother Catherine from 1891 Census through to 1911 Census, Occupation on 1911 as Motor Accessories Shop assistant.

Thank you for looking. My Grandmother married my Grandfather in London in 1920, I have this marriage certificate, this is how we know his Fathers name is William. I too have seen the 1920 census but don't believe it is correct. My Grandfather did tell my Zgrandmother that he was only just born in England before he emigrated to the USA. There may be more knowledege but this is with my surviving Aunt and at 96 she is not up to talking about it.

Found this which might be worth looking into:

Thomas J Thompson (name was changed whilst in America for a reason not yet discovered). born in Birmingham in England in 1891 he travelled to the United States or Canada with his parents - parents were in the Salvation Army, picture of parents and two sisters about 1912, names on back of picture state Elsie and Dorothy. Thomas travelled with the BEF from Canada in the first world war to England, he was in a mounted brigade - injured by a horse he needed a metal plate in his head. My grandmother Rose Louise Robson met him when he was recovering in London, they married in 1920 and had Jessica my aunt, followed a few years later by June. The sisters were aware that there was an issue over his being in the States and knew that he had children but they did not know they actually had brothers Thomas Julius Thompson and William Bradley Thompson, both now deceased. The likeness to William is uncanny - my Aunt Jessica is so like him and also in her 90's. I am so disappointed that we were unable to meet him before he passed and would love to know if anyone out there has more information on him.
William Bradley Thompson - worked for 45 years with NC Hall in Fort Worth - a Baptist and in retirement he was a crossing guard. Mother was Jeannie Pearl Garrison known as Pearl and sister Virginia Shaw.
All of Thomas's children were brought up with Mothers who had to struggle to keep food on the table. He fought hard in his short life to bring happiness to his daughters and worked long hours before he died an early death from inflammation of the bowel.
I want to build his life and family through this tree and hope that someone out there will help me.

If Thomas J Thompson married Rose L Robson in 1919 what was he doing in Texas in the 1920 Census with Pearl Garrison. Something is not right here

'two sisters about 1912, names on back of picture state Elsie and Dorothy'

Do you know where they were living when this picture was taken and were the born in England ?

''Thomas J Thompson (name was changed whilst in America) '' What was his original name ?

by Swamigo on 2015-06-07 15:01:00

Wow what a fantastic response, the reason he was back in USA in 1920 was to officially leave the service and terminate his connection with Pearl. Not sure who wrote about him knowing of his inflammation of the bowel but we must be related as Jessica is my aunt too.
Most of what you have found is about the same as me. Someone must know this family and what went on. He was 19 going on 20 when he joined the USA Army, 1920 shows him as 30. Need to recheck the marriage certificate but I know his father was William. Attestation tallies with 1920 Census, marriage to Rose Robson in 1919 is iffy, Aunt Jessica is coming up 96 so maybe he married Rose being honorable.
