Away
I cannot say, I will not say
That she is dead, she is just away
With a cheery smile and a wave of the hand
She has wandered away to an unknown land
And left us dreaming how very fair
It needs must be, since she lingers there
And you - oh, you who the wildest yearn
For the old-time step, and the glad return
Think of her faring on, as dear
In the love of there, as the love of here
Think of her still as the same I say
She is not dead - she is just away
From family Nick, Dod & Sid

10 May 1898 - OBITUARY ... Mr Gilbert Crerar Matheson, who for many years has been a well-known and greatly respected citizen of Dunedin died on the 25th ult. The deceased gentleman was a native of Sutherlandshire, having been born at Holmsdale in the year 1838. Before leaving the Home country for this colony he was for some time employed as corresponding clerk for Messrs Todd, Burns and Co., wholesale drapers, Dublin. He came to Otago by the ship Pladda in 1863, and on his arrival was engaged as coresponding clerk by Messrs Dalgety. Some time subsequently, in conjunction with the late George H. Campbell, be bought out Messrs Weir and Co, glass and china importers, whose premises were in Maclaggan street. Next he and his brother Thomas opened a retail shop in Princes street, and had a wholesale warehouse in Crawford street, and some years since removed their business to premises in Dowling street, now occupied by Messrs Benjamin and Co. A few years since the deceased was the subject of a paralytic stroke from which he never recovered, but sank gradually, his death not being unexpected. The late Mr Matheson did not take a prominenet part in public affairs, though some 20 years ago he represented South Ward in the City Council. On the occasion of his leaving for a visit to the old country, however, he resigned his seat as a councillor, and never afterwards sought re-election. He took an active interest in Knox Church, and was a member of the committee appointed to supervise the erection of the present structure. His consistently pleasant, cheerful and gentlemanly demeanour won for him many friends, who feel his loss deeply. The deceased leaves a widow and four sons, the eldest of whom is in the Union Bank at Perth

:: Thomas Taylor CUTBUSH (1844-1885) & Frances Augusta Evelyn WATSON had Blanche Evelyn Cutbush
* Thomas had married Agnes Ingles Stoddart (1850-1870) in St Johns Presbyterian Church, Willis St, Wellington 10 Dec 1867 (apparently bigamously) as his second wife. Agnes was 18 and he stated he was single. Their witnesses were George Sample & John C. Stoddart. They had a born still daughter, Helen Stoddart Cutbush, 17 weeks later. Agnes died 17 July 1870 aged 20 and is buried with her mother, Christina Stoddart (1818-1892), at Sydney St cemetery Wellington.
* Thomas next married Frances Augusta Evelyn Watson as his third wife, 2 months later - on 24 Sep 1870 in Wellington. Sometime after the birth of their daughter, Blanche Evelyn Cutbush in 1872, they moved to Australia and had a daughter in Sydney in 1876, Clara Augusta Cutbush
NOTES
* There are sites on the net that have that Blanche Evelyn Cutbush, born 3 Jan 1872 was a twin with Mary Frances Cutbush! (slack researching). Mary was in fact born 13 March 1872 to Charles Cutbush (1839-) & Mary Frances Foster who married in Australia, later moving to Hokitika, NZ
* Thomas Taylor Cutbush married his first wife, Kate Hayne in London 29 Sep 1864 and had a son, Thomas Hayne Cutbush (1866-1903) who at the time was suspected as being Jack The Ripper. The police, after investigations, disproved this (there was a book written on it)

* DUNFOY on 20 Dec, the wife of C. Dunfoy, of a son (sic)
:: Charles DUNFOY & Elizabeth DAVIES had Emily Grace Dunfoy (died aged 7 weeks)

* Charles Dunfoy was, according to his military records, born in Dublin in 1837 but was more likely 1835. He joined the 70th Surrey Regiment at age 14 as a drummer and was stationed at Chatham, Kent in 1851. He was in India during the 70th Indian Mutiny then NZ during the NZ land wars and was discharged at Napier around 1865/6 where he married Elizabeth in Napier in 1867. They lived in Hopper street, Mount Cook, Wellington for a few years when was a bottler in Wellington in partnership with John Petrie Speed (1827-1877), (advertising the public to try Dunfoy & Speed's Dunedin Ales and Stout), until 21 Nov 1876 when the partnership was mutually dissolved. The business then became Dunfoy & Co in the Empire Bottling Store, Willis street, behind Chew's building. He was also the appointed Agent for the Mataura Paper Mill Company and bought rags, canvas, old rope, bags etc, mixtures of all kinds. He was adjudged bankrupt in 1877 and moved to Hawkes Bay & Auckland. In 1886 Sir George Grey presented a petition to Parliament in Wellington, from Charles, of Chelsea, North Shore, Auckland, an old soldier applying for a grant of land. Charles was charged in 1889 of failing to support his wife and children. (He was charged again in Jan 1903, from information from Elizabeth, with the same offence), the case was dismissed. It was recommended in 1890 that he receive his solders entitled 60 acres in Hawkes Bay. He was in Napier in 1893 when he was charged with a grossly indecent act in Customs street and was sentenced to seven days hard labour. Later that year he was charged with supplying liquor to a prohibited person in Clive. In Sep 1900, Charles and 135 other Old Soldiers/Veterans, were entertained by the Governor on Sebastopol Day at Government House, Wellington. He had his Old Age Pension renewed to £16 a year in Auckland in June 1903 (equivalent in 2012 to $670). He lost his pension in Gisborne in Jan 1906 because, the judge told him .. "he would not allow the country to pay your liquor bill" The police report showed that his conduct had not been good since he arrived in Gisborne and was drunk every day.
Charles died 11 Oct 1907 of pneumonia in Gisborne Hospital aged 72 and is buried Houhoupiko Cemetery (now Makaraka Cemetery), Gisborne

Borlase (married to Dr Norris) was confined of a little boy. Dr Norris about the same time became unwell and died on the night of the 12th. Some friemds in the house injudiciously told Mrs Morris of his death immediately and the effect upon her may be imagined. She insisted on the dead body of her husband being brought in to her bedroom and stood up by her bedside for her to see. The scene was, I believe, something fearful. on October 25 1953 COWELL, Wilfred Marcus Allan, dearly loved husband of Neille Marie Cowell and loving daddy of Richard and Suzanne, and brother-in-law of Mr and Mrs L. Saward (Penguin); aged 44 years. Accidentally drowned
on October 25 1952 Wilfred Marcus Allan, dearly loved second youngest son of Mrs E. Cowell (Stanley) and loved brother of Elsie (dec.), Gladys (Mrs Nicholls, Melbourne), Archie (Traralgon), Irene (Mrs Ferguson, Richmond), Frank (dec.), Claude (Stanley), Gwen (dec.); aged 44 years. Accidentally drowned.
THREE DROWNED WHEN FISHING VESSEL STRUCK REEF AT NIGHT - Raymond Etchell (34), his son John (6) and Wilfred Marcus Alan Cowell (44), all of Stanley, lost their lives when Etchell's fishing launch 'Telopea' struck a reef off Guyton Point, on the north-eastern corner of Robin's Island, early on Saturday morning. Residents of the island who saw the Telopea ashore on the beach about 9.30 a.m. discovered tho bodies of the two men. With the pedal radio service at the island temporarily out of order, first news of the tragedy was taken to Smithton by Mr William Holyman, who arrived there by launch at 4.30 p.m. on Saturday.
The Telopea left Stanley I at 10 o'clock on Friday night for the crayfishing grounds of Hunter's Island and should have been off Robins Island about midnight. The reef, which runs out from the bluff at Guyton Point for about 200 yards contains three pinnacles at spaced intervals. They are nearly awash at high tide. In the darkness they are almost invisible and sailors give the point a wide berth. Etchell had a good knowledge of the island, and would have been aware of the dangers of the reef.
Local fishermen state that Friday night was fairly calm and clear, and find it difficult to know why the boat should have been close enough inshore to strike the reef.
As both bodies were without coats or boots it is thought the men made an effort to swim ashore. The presence of the child, John Etchell, on the wrecked vessel was not suspected until contact was made with Stanley. His body was found yesterday morning about 100 yards from the wreck. Plans to take Dr. D. G. Packham and the police to thc Island yesterday by air were upset by rough weather, which grounded planes in the area.
Sen. Constable R. Lockett and Trooper S. Crocket, of Stanley, were taken to the Island by Etehel's brother, Mr Oscar Etchell, in his fishing boat, the Cutty Sark, yesterday morning.
In the course of an extremely rough passage, with gales estimated at about 50 miles per hour, both police officers sustained cuts and bruises. After another hazardous voyage the three victims were taken to Smithton late yesterday afternoon.
An inquiry will be opened in Smithton to-day when evidence of identification will be taken by the Coroner (Mr R. H. Atkinson). Etchell is survived by his widow and a three-year-old daughter and Cowell by his widow and a small son and daughter

? after the 2011 Christchurch earthquake of magnitude 6.3, which killed 185 people, the scores of damaged graves may not be repaired. The cracked and toppled tombstones in historic Christchurch cemeteries may not be fixed because no-one will pay for them. Memorials crumbled, obelisks snapped in half and hundreds of headstones across the city crashed to the ground in February's earthquake. Historic Cemeteries Conservation Trust chairman Stewart Harvey said the earthquake wreaked havoc across cemeteries in Canterbury. The historic Barbadoes St cemetery sustained serious damage in the quake. Scores of headstones now lie cracked in grave plots, sinking into silt caused by liquefaction

? this is an ongoing project and hoping to fill all gaps above. Your help appreciated
