Virtually all GINGRAS families in the United States are descended from Hilaire Gingreau and Francoise St. Lo of Saint Michel le Clou, France. Their two sons, Sebastian and Charles came to Canada in the 17th century, got married and started families.

Sebastian's family did not fare well and died out after a few generations.

Charles married Francoise Amiot on November 5, 1675 and started a large family. They had eight surviving sons and two daughters. Six of their sons had surviving sons who carried on the name, changed to Gingras.

There has been a good deal of research done on the Gingras family. Raymond Gingras of Quebec published a book in French titled "Charles Gingras et Francoise Amiot, Biographie des ancestres et descendance".

Andrew Gingras of New Hampshire devoted years to the collection of Gingras marriage information and created a typed (!) document containing all of the marriages he could find, thousands of them. I fear that Andew Gingras has retired at least from genealogy, if not from this world.
