At age 24 he enlisted in the infantry on 8th November 1916 at Liverpool NSW and was discharged 17th March 1919 at Victoria barracks Sydney as unfit to continue following his bronchial condition resulting from "Trench Fever" and his smoking habit. He was wounded in the left leg whilst fighting in France.
N 6819 AIF 6th Light Horse.
After the war he worked in Grafton and was a friend of Digby NOTT who was married to Leda Notley, sister of Elma Notley. Charles and Digby were both returned servicemen and met at the RSL in Grafton. Charles became friendly with Elma and she became pregnant.
In 1922 the year Elma gave birth to her daughter Betty, Charles had gone back to Cootamundra and married Hilda Parker. It is not known if Charles was aware of the pregnancy.
He lived in Queens Avenue Parramatta for a number of years and he died in the Curie Nursing Home Parramatta NSW.


Notes for ELMA CLAIRE NOTLEY:

Elma was pregnant with Betty at age 17-18 years, and her mother was deceased at this time. Her father placed advertisements in the Grafton paper seeking a foster family for the baby.
They made Elma give up her child and had her placed in foster care at age 4 months with the Williams family of Coffs Harbour.
Foster parents were Robert Williams and Ina Williams nee Bonwick.
It is not known why Charles Gravolin left town, but is thought that Elma's father would not let his daughter marry a Catholic and as he held high office in the Masonic Lodge he did not wish for any scandal to become known in the local area. Then again Charles may not have known about the pregnancy when he moved to Cootamundra.
Elma found that after she married "Frank" Jones that they could not have children so she asked her father (along with the support of her brother Osric and sister Leda) to have Betty returned to her, but her father told her that Betty had died.

Notes for BETTY EILEEN (GRAVOLIN-WILLIAMS) NOTLEY:
At age 4 months Betty was fostered in Coffs Harbour with Robert Williams and Ina Williams nee Bonwick. She was brought up as a Catholic and when her foster parents became ill she became the primary carer for them and also for an illegitimate child of Robert Williams junior and Nellie Simpson, Bernard Joseph Williams who was 3 years older than Betty. She may have been fostered as a companion for this grandchild, but then the foster care payments would have been very helpful in those times of the Great Depression.
Thomas Notley paid for the care of Betty but the payments ceased when Betty was around 8 years old.
Robert Williams senior contracted cancer and died in 1936 when Betty was 14, Ina had high blood pressure and frequent nose bleeds requiring constant nursing. Ina's daughter Hilda lived nearby but made life difficult for Betty, refusing to accept her as part of the family. The family home had to be sold on the death of Robert senior to pay debts so Ina and Betty moved into rented premises. Betty worked as a domestic for a number of homes in the earning enough to support Ina and eventually secured a job in the dining room of the railway station.
At age 18 she married Clyde Nicholson.
Ina moved in with Betty and Clyde until 1948, when she moved in with Bernard Williams and his wife Dorrie. Ina died in 1956.

Betty died from pancreatic cancer at Pindara Hospital Southport Qld.

Clyde grew up at Nana Glenn NSW and then the family moved to Coffs Harbour where he was apprenticed as a Carpenter eventually becoming a builder.
On 16th May 1941 he enlisted in the army N160340 . He was discharged 4th Sept. 1945 and was in the 5th Hospital Maintenance platoon. For all of his war service he was stationed in Sydney working on the Concord repatriation Hospital His wife Betty and daughter Yvonne moved to Sydney to be with him. After discharge the now enlarged family moved back to Coffs Harbour. In 1949 the family moved to Brisbane and in 1957 moved again to the Gold Coast.
Clyde is burried in the Mudgeeraba Cemetery on the Gold Coast Qld.

Baker and pastry cook.
At age 24 he enlisted in the infantry on 8th November 1916 at Liverpool NSW and was discharged 17th March 1919 at Victoria barracks Sydney as unfit to continue following his bronchial condition resulting from "Trench Fever" and his smoking habit. He was wounded in the left leg whilst fighting in France.
N 6819 AIF 6th Light Horse.
After the war he worked in Grafton and was a friend of Digby NOTT who was married to Leda Notley, sister of Elma Notley. Charles and Digby were both returned servicemen and met at the RSL in Grafton. Charles became friendly with Elma and she became pregnant.
In 1922 the year Elma gave birth to her daughter Betty, Charles had gone back to Cootamundra and married Hilda Parker. It is not known if Charles was aware of the pregnancy.
He lived in Queens Avenue Parramatta for a number of years and he died in the Curie Nursing Home Parramatta NSW.

Elma was pregnant with Betty at age 17-18 years, and her mother was deceased at this time. Her father placed advertisements in the Grafton paper seeking a foster family for the baby.
They made Elma give up her child and had her placed in foster care at age 4 months with the Williams family of Coffs Harbour.
Foster parents were Robert Williams and Ina Williams nee Bonwick.
It is not known why Charles Gravolin left town, but is thought that Elma's father would not let his daughter marry a Catholic and as he held high office in the Masonic Lodge he did not wish for any scandal to become known in the local area. Then again Charles may not have known about the pregnancy when he moved to Cootamundra.
Elma found that after she married "Frank" Jones that they could not have children so she asked her father (along with the support of her brother Osric and sister Leda) to have Betty returned to her, but her father told her that Betty had died.
